What is PreTexting?

PreTexting is where an attacker obtains information through a series of lies. Often initiated by an attacker pretending to need sensitive information from a victim to perform a critical task.

It usually starts with the attacker establishing trust with their victim by impersonating a co-worker, police, bank staff, tax official or friend of someone they know even.  They may ask questions to confirm the victim’s identity, through which they will gather important information which is then used to instigate an attack on the victim or organisation.
